Baker Outlines Vision to Protect Prince George’s County Amid $3 Billion State Budget Cut
LARGO, MD — January 15, 2025 - Standing at Northwest Stadium, former Prince George’s
County Executive Rushern Baker III yesterday outlined his vision to protect county interests following the governor’s announcement of a $3 billion state budget reduction.
For those of us in Prince George’s County, it is very important that we have the leadership to make sure we get everything we need from Annapolis, Baker said, drawing on his experience as both county executive for eight years and state legislator for eight years.
Baker chose Northwest Stadium for his announcement to highlight his vision for economic development in what he previously branded as Downtown Prince George’s County. The location showcases successful development under his previous administration, including expanded hotels and housing complexes along the Blue Line Metro at Morgan Boulevard.
Key priorities in Bakers legislative agenda include:
Keeping the Commanders in Prince George’s County: Baker announced plans to retain the Commanders through either a redeveloped stadium in Downtown Largo or a potential new location at National Harbor MGM, leveraging the county’s position as the Washington area’s premier entertainment district.
Healthcare Expansion: Baker will push for restoration of previously cut hospital beds at the Capital Regional Medical Center in Largo. The hospital doesn’t have nearly enough beds... That is why you see wait times in our hospital. The way to alleviate that is to put those beds back in,” Baker explained. He also committed to expanding mental health facilities both at the Capital Regional Medical Center and the Laurel site.
School Safety and Education: Responding to parent concerns, Baker will advocate for increased school safety funding from the state’s capital budget. He also supports implementing individual learning plans for all students, following a successful model from Frederick County.
Utility Rate Relief: Baker discussed increasing utility costs and vowed to collaborate with the state legislature to tackle the recent utility rate hikes passed directly to customers. “We will have a proactive approach under this administration for creating more jobs, economic development, and making sure that we bring public safety dollars back to Prince George’s County,” Baker concluded.
About Rushern Baker:
Rushern Baker previously served as Prince George’s County Executive, during which time the county experienced significant economic growth, reduced crime rates, and expanded healthcare access. His administration successfully attracted major development projects while supporting small business growth throughout the county.

Baker on Protecting Federal Diversity Programs
LARGO, MD — January 24, 2025 - Statement on Trump Administration’s Attack on Diversity
“President Trump’s recent executive orders targeting federal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts and authorizing ICE to detain individuals at community events, like church services and school gatherings, are deeply concerning. These actions not only threaten our diverse community but also create fear and mistrust, tearing at the bonds that hold us together.
This is a moment for unity. We must protect the values of inclusion, equity, and fairness that define who we are. I encourage everyone in our community to join me in standing up for the fair treatment of all residents and ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities.
Let’s come together, speak out, and create a community.”
